We have yet to sample the entry-level 2.0-litre four-cylinder models (the Si4 petrol and SD4 diesel), but we have been impressed with the performance of both units in the smaller Range Rover Velar. We have tried the plug-in hybrid P400e variant, which combines the Si4's 296bhp petrol engine with a 114bhp electric motor to give a healthy blast when you put your foot down – albeit not quite enough to match the equivalent Volvo XC90 T8. You can run the P400e on electric power alone for up to a claimed 31 miles (about 20 miles in the real world) and at speeds of up to 85mph. It can’t match the 3.0-litre six-cylinder SDV6 diesel's all-round abilities, though. Indeed, the SDV6 has even more mid-rev shove, helping to mask the car’s considerable mass and make it a better option for towing a heavy caravan – even if rivals such as the Audi Q7 3.0 TDI 272 and BMW X5 xDrive40d are still that little bit faster. If you want sports car levels of performance, there's the SDV8. With a 4.4-litre diesel V8, this model is effortlessly quick and the engine responds consistently whenever you touch the accelerator – something that can’t be said about the supercharged 3.0-litre V6 petrol. Yes, it is quiet and smooth at low revs, but the V6 needs working very hard to get the best performance from it. Driven normally, the V6 petrol actually feels a little weaker than the SDV6, while also coming with the additional penalty of poor fuel economy. 'Weak' isn't how we'd describe either the 518bhp 5.0-litre petrol V8 in the Supercharged or the 567bhp version in the SVR; 'extravagantly powerful' would be a more pertinent description. Indeed, the latter in particular makes the Range Rover Sport a genuinely fast and exciting performance SUV. You’ll find yourself breathing a sigh of relief when you spot a national speed limit sign and can finally enjoy the delicious, high-pitched wail of its supercharger and trumpeting fanfair of its exhausts that accompanies the prodigious performance. That said, a generally slow-witted automatic gearbox dulls its performance lustre, and if you fancy something similarly fast but much more economical, have a look at the diesel Audi SQ7 instead.

Ride

Most versions of the Range Rover Sport offer exemplary ride comfort, although the Q7 (on optional air suspension) still manages to treat you to an extra edge of waftability. Particularly impressive is the Range Rover Sport's suppleness at high speeds, making this a superb car to drive on a long journey and, unlike in some luxury SUVs, you don’t have to fiddle with numerous system preferences to get the car into a comfortable mode. The best-riding models are those at the bottom of the range on the smallest wheels; entry-level HSE trim, for example, with 20in wheels. Higher-spec and higher-powered versions with 21in and 22in wheels are a little less supple over bumps, especially around town, but are still pretty comfortable. The SVR model – the only Range Rover Sport offered with performance road tyres on its optional 22in wheels – has a stiffer ride than other models. It's more comfortable on the motorway than it is at lower speeds – when it tends to thump over broken Tarmac in town – but if ride and performance are of equal importance, we refer you again to the rather pillowy SQ7.

Handling

All Range Rover Sports offer an excellent blend of stability and relative agility. It isn’t the most athletic SUV of its kind, nor is it one that feels smaller than it actually is, and some rivals also offer more grip and tighter body control. However, the Range Rover Sport is an easy car to drive along a twisty road, mostly thanks to the consistency of its controls. Every model apart from the SVR uses the same height-adjustable air suspension set-up, but entry-level HSE versions don’t get all the high-tech handling and off-road aids of more expensive variants. These can be added as an optional extra and are worth having if poised on-road handling or driving across tricky terrain are high on your list of priorities. Unsurprisingly, the sharpest Range Rover Sport in the line-up is the range-topping SVR variant. Primarily, it still feels like a two-and-a-half tonne SUV and not a sports car, but turn in to a fast corner and it remains surprisingly flat, even if it wouldn't see which way a Porsche Cayenne Turbo or SQ7 went down a challenging, twisty road. However, it's far more tail happy than those rivals, so if lively handling rather than chasing lap times is your thing, there's definitely buckets of fun to be had behind the wheel of an SVR.

Refinement

There’s some wind noise on the motorway – that’s inevitable for such a large, upright car – but the disturbance is limited to a gentle flutter around the door mirrors and front pillars. Versions on 20in wheels don’t suffer from much road noise, but you hear more in cars fitted with 21in and 22in wheels. There’s little to choose between the SDV6 and the SDV8 when it comes to engine noise. Both diesel engines are smooth at low revs and when cruising, and remain well mannered even when worked hard. Nothing in the range beats the plug-in hybrid P400e for refinement when it's operating in electric-only mode, while the 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol (which includes the P400e's engine, when it's running) is quiet provided you stick to lower revs; let it spin up towards the redline and it gets very vocal, emitting a four-cylinder rasp that, arguably, not everybody will find appropriate for a luxury SUV. Meanwhile, the V6 petrol engine is pretty quiet at low revs, then as the revs climb it generates a pleasant V6 howl, albeit one overlaid with a whine from the supercharger. Both V8 petrol versions have extravagant engines with loud soundtracks to match (the high-performance SVR variant is especially thunderous). While they can be more muted when driven gently, they certainly announce themselves when driven hard. Still, both are performance engines rather than silky, luxury ones, and the soundtrack is arguably a big part of their appeal.

Driving Position

A high driving position is something that has marked out a Range Rover for decades – and even though the Sport model's isn’t quite as commanding as the traditional Range Rover’s, it doesn’t disappoint. The seat is incredibly comfortable and supportive, although the integrated head restraint of the SVR model’s sports seat is set slightly too low to be comfortable for tall drivers. The pedals line up nicely with the seat, though, and the electric steering column offers lots of reach and rake adjustment. All the controls – including the Terrain Response control that allows you to adjust the car’s dynamic settings to suit the type of surface you’re driving on – are within easy reach on the centre console.

Visibility

You climb up onto the driver’s seat, which gives you an excellent view of the road ahead. You can see over hedges, walls and most other vehicles, so potential hazards will be easily spotted. The view also helps when trying to place the car on the road; this is especially useful considering how much of the road the Range Rover Sport takes up. Your vision directly rearwards and over the shoulder is fine, too. It’s limited a little by the tapering rear side windows, but this is no worse than in most other luxury SUVs. And besides, manoeuvring is aided by standard front and rear parking sensors, as well as a rear-view camera. You can pay extra to get an all-round camera system, which includes front, rear and bird’s eye views, or a self-parking system that’ll slot the car into a space for you. Fine night-time illumination comes courtesy of standard adaptive LED headlights.

Infotainment

  • whatcar star

All Range Rover Sports get a pair of 10.0in touchscreens (the same set-up as that in the smaller Velar); one screen sits where you’d expect it to be, towards the top of the dashboard, and the other below it, in front of the gear selector. This second screen is the one that you use to access the air conditioning and off-road modes, but you can also operate the multimedia system through it while the main screen displays the navigation. This layout gives a minimalist look to the interior that’s certainly appealing, plus the graphics are sharp and there’s only some occasional lag when you select something. But while the menus prove easy enough to navigate when you’re stationary, the lower screen can be distracting to use on the move compared with old-school physical buttons. It’s also disappointing to note that neither Android Auto nor Apple CarPlay smartphone mirroring is available. There is a free app from Land Rover that gives you a certain amount of smartphone connectivity, but our experience suggests that it can be a bit slow and cumbersome.

Build Quality

The standard of the Range Rover Sport’s interior finish is very high; even if it's not quite as robustly screwed together as the Audi Q7's interior, it certainly has more 'wow' factor. There’s impressive attention to detail on show, from the stitching on the leather upholstery to numerous metal inlays. Leather upholstery comes as standard, while you can pay extra for more leather to cover the central part of the dashboard and the top of the doors, making the interior feel even more luxurious. The main area of weakness is the plasticky feel of the switches. You'll feel a greater sense of satisfaction from operating a Q7's precision buttons.

Front Space

The Range Rover Sport provides generous space for long-legged people up front. There’s plenty of elbow room, too. Less impressive is the car’s outright head room, which isn’t in the same league as that in the standard Range Rover – or as generous as that of key rivals. It’s not so scant that it’ll affect most drivers, but if you’re particularly tall, you’ll be better off in a Volvo XC90. Two cupholders are located on the centre console and can be neatly covered by a sliding lid; they’re both big enough for larger paper cups and 1.0-litre bottles. The glovebox and centre cubby are also a good size, although the door pockets are quite slim.

Rear Space

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

The Range Rover Sport isn’t the most commodious car in its class for rear passengers, but it’s certainly big. There’s good head and knee room, for example, so a couple of six-footers are unlikely to feel cramped. A middle passenger might do, though. The two outer seats are sculpted, while the middle one is relatively narrow and uncomfortable. It’s fine for children or smaller adults on short hops, but if you want a car to regularly seat five adults for any moderate length of time, you should shop elsewhere. On this front, the SVR model makes the situation worse; by exaggerating the bolsters of the outer seats, the middle seat is even less comfortable. The Range Rover Sport is a five-seat car as standard, but you can pay extra to have two additional seats that fit in the boot. These are nowhere near as usable as the ones in the back of a Land Rover Discovery or Mercedes-Benz GLS; access is a slightly awkward clamber through a narrow gap and space is sufficient for children and small adults only. Still, having up to seven seats will be useful for some people. Just remember that you can't have those extra seats in the P400e; the space they require under the boot floor is taken up by the batteries. Just as they are in the front, the rear door pockets are quite small, but they will swallow a 1.0-litre bottle. There are, however, few other places to transfer the contents of your pockets into other than small nets on the front seatbacks.

Seating Flexibility

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

Broadly speaking, the Range Rover Sport does well to make the most of what it’s got. The second-row seats slide forward and backwards, as well as reclining to several positions, but the access they grant to the optional third row isn’t great. The two outer seats slide and tilt forward to allow just enough space to plant a foot or a knee on your way into the rearmost row – but nothing more. The tilted middle-row seats don’t revert to their original position afterwards, either, stopping instead in their most forward setting; that's annoying if you’re an adult getting into row two. The third-row seats are raised and lowered individually via electric motors. This can be done via buttons at the rear doors or just inside the boot opening. It takes a while for the electric motors to get the seats up or down, and they don’t save you from manual handling entirely, because there’s still a load bay cover to remove and replace. At least this is relatively light and easy to handle. Depending on the trim level you choose, the front passenger seat gets either 16 or 18-way electric adjustment, although it’s disappointing that adjustable lumbar support is included only on high-end Autobiography Dynamic versions (it’s an optional extra on cheaper models). The SVR is the only model in the range to benefit from lightweight Supersport front seats that offer more lateral support than the standard ones. And despite the seats being remarkably thin, the Special Vehicle Operations division has managed to integrate both heating and cooling functions within (something that’s available as an option).

Boot Space

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

Here, too, the Range Rover Sport has a good but not outstanding hand to play. While some rivals offer split tailgates or separate-opening rear windows, it has neither – so accessing a fully loaded boot without disturbing its contents isn't always easy. The boot itself is wide and fairly tall. Straight sides and a broad opening grant easy access and make loading bulky items simple, and the boot’s generous capacity means you can fit a lot in. The boots in several rivals are longer, though, plus there’s no additional underfloor storage space in the Range Rover Sport if you go for the seven-seat option; the two extra seats sit under the boot floor when not in use. If you go for the P400e, the boot floor is slightly raised, because of the large battery pack underneath, making its boot slightly smaller. There are lashing points in all four corners of the boot, while load space stowage rails with divider bars are on the options list. If you need to carry particularly big loads, dropping the rear seats reveals a huge load area that’ll take practically anything you throw at it. The standard hands-free, electrically controlled tailgate is another neat touch.

Running Costs

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

The Range Rover Sport is an expensive car, and no amount of adjusting for standard equipment or balancing out ownership costs will mitigate that fact. It’s a good 10-20% pricier in the showroom than many like-for-like rivals – and that turns out to be a good rule of thumb for other costs, too, with contract hire and monthly PCP bills all putting the car at a similar premium. Real-world fuel economy is closer to that of the Range Rover Sport’s rivals, however. Driven carefully, you should be able to average just over 30mpg for the SDV6 model; that’s pretty decent for such a large car, if a little adrift of what the Audi Q7 and BMW X5 can manage. The P400e will offer seriously cheap running costs if you maintain its charge (it'll do about 20 miles electric driving in the real world), but expect about 25mpg at best from the petrol engine once the batteries are depleted. Therefore, if you do lots of motorway miles, a diesel still makes far more sense, although company car drivers' interest may be piqued by the P400e's 16% benefit-in-kind tax band. You won't need to pay the London Congestion Charge, either. Good resale values help to offset some of the car’s initial expensiveness. SDV6 versions fare particularly well and will retain more of their original value than the majority of luxury SUVs. Private buyers should avoid the V6 petrol models, though; these have worse resale values than the rest of the range, apart from the range-topping SVR variant. Land Rover offers a five-year/50,000-mile servicing package for the car. It’s decent value and will make privately owned examples easier to sell on.

Range Rover Sport trims are split into HSE, HSE Dynamic and Autobiography Dynamic, with SVR at the top of the range. We’d recommend HSE, not least because the car is expensive enough in entry-level trim, but also because it’s well equipped. HSE gets 20in alloy wheels, air suspension, electrically adjustable leather seats, sat-nav, dual-zone climate control, heated front and rear seats, a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive LED headlights, keyless entry and an electrically operated tailgate. To that, we’d add the on/off-road pack, body-coloured side sills and bumper corners, and the Meridian surround-sound system (for optimal resale values, as much as anything). Adding the adaptive cruise control would help make long-distance cruising that bit easier, too. HSE Dynamic trim comes with plenty of stuff we’d happily live without – such as 21in wheels, sports pedals and illuminated interior sills. Even if you pay extra for Autobiography Dynamic – and it’s a lot extra compared with even HSE Dynamic – you could still easily spend another £15,000 on optional extras, so beware the lure of the options list.

Reliability

The Range Rover Sport got a pretty poor vote by you in our latest reliability survey; 167 faults per 100 vehicles is the worst score for a luxury SUV. It's no better for the Range Rover brand, either; it achieved below-average marks to finish 31st out of the 32 manufacturers tested. The standard three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty should provide some peace of mind, especially because it covers the car for towing as well as normal usage. Extended warranties are available that cover the Range Rover Sport for up to five years, although the mileage limit is 75,000 miles. Three years' worth of breakdown cover also comes with the car, including the cost of recovery to the nearest Land Rover dealer and onward transport or overnight accommodation. That, too, can be extended at extra cost.

Safety And Security

Every car comes with front, side and curtain airbags, automatic emergency braking and a sophisticated stability control system that includes trailer stability assist. No matter which version you go for, you’ll still have to pay extra for blindspot monitoring, lane departure warning and cross traffic alert, which warns you if there’s traffic behind the car when you’re reversing. An emergency SOS feature is standard. This notifies the emergency services of your location should you be unfortunate enough to have a big crash. Most models come with a space-saver spare wheel, so we’d add the full-sized one, especially if you plan to use your car to tow or drive off road. The SVR model makes do with a tyre repair kit as standard, with the space-saver spare wheel available as a no-cost optional extra. An alarm and an engine immobiliser are on hand to fend off thieves. However, if your Range Rover Sport is stolen, a feature called Incontrol Secure tracks the car to increase the chances of a speedy recovery. Security expert Thatcham Research awarded the car top marks for resisting being driven away and four out of five for guarding against being broken into.
