The Sociedad Española de Automóviles de Turismo was formed in Spain as a government subsidiary in 1950. Quickly becoming the largest supplier of vehicles in Spain, it was then sold to the Volkswagen Group in 1986, where it still remains a wholly owned subsidiary.
Since its inception, SEAT has produced many popular models under its own name, almost all named after Spanish place names, and also exported under its former partner, Fiat. SEAT’s main base of operations in Barcelona also houses the manufacturing lines for some of VWs other brands, including Audi and Skoda.
The current line-up of SEATs includes the lovable little Ibiza, the spacious Toledo, the classic Leon, the adorable Arona and the utilitarian Ateca. The Spanish motorheads are soon-to-be launching a full-size SUV, the Tarraco, and also creating the Cupra marque as a standalone brand, for high-performance variants of the existing roster; beginning with the Leon and Ateca.
