What Car? Reviews

The Audi A5 Coupé is comfortable, quiet and very classy, but it could be a little more exciting to drive

Verdict For

  • Plush interior
  • Strong and smooth engines
  • Practical by coupé standards

Verdict Against

  • Steering could be more involving
  • You’ll want to add a few options
  • Sports suspension brings an overly firm ride

Depending on which trim you choose, there are three suspension options. The adaptive set-up, which costs extra, is supple enough to take the sting out of smaller ripples and bigger bumps alike. Just bear in mind that the A5 doesn’t ride sharp-edged potholes quite as well as the A4, particularly with the suspension switched to its firmer Dynamic mode. We’ve also tried the stiffer S line suspension without adaptive dampers and it’s quite a bit firmer. Audi says it has intentionally made the A5 'sportier' than the A4 because that’s what buyers will expect from a coupé. But the truth is if you were looking for driving thrills you’d be better off with a BMW 4 Series. The A5’s steering is precise, but it never really involves you in the process of going round corners, which is a pity given how much fun to drive Audi’s smaller TT coupé is. Mind you, the A5 grips the road well and, if you switch the optional adaptive suspension to the firmer of its two modes, there’s little body roll through bends. The entry-point to the engine range is the 148bhp 1.4 TFSI. It delivers reasonable pace but needs working fairly hard. At least it's always smooth, though. We have yet to try the 2.0 TFSI 190, but the 2.0 TFSI 252 doesn't feel as quick as you might imagine because you need to rev it harder that the diesels. The entry-level diesel (a 187bhp 2.0-litre) is nippy enough and sends its power to the front wheels. Meanwhile, the most potent diesels (216bhp and 282bhp 3.0-litres) get Audi’s quattro four-wheel-drive system and automatic gearboxes as standard. Even the lesser 3.0-litre unit's outright power is impressive, but it’s how much low-down pulling power it produces that really takes your breath away; put your foot down hard away from some traffic lights and you’ll be doing 62mph in less than six seconds. If anything, this is the most rounded choice. It makes the higher-powered diesel and range-topping V6 petrol S5 seem altogether unnecessary. The smooth engines combine with minimal wind noise to make the A5 a peaceful cruiser. Some road noise is noticeable over coarse surfaces, but if you stay away from the really big wheels this is kept to an acceptable level.

Audi is renowned for its classy, minimalist interiors that are both exquisitely finished and super-intuitive. The A5 doesn’t disappoint, bettering its rivals from BMW and Mercedes-Benz with upmarket materials everywhere you look and a simple, user-friendly dashboard layout. Audi’s MMI infotainment system comes as standard and features a clear 7.0in display mounted centrally on the dashboard that’s controlled using a rotary dial positioned between the front seats. You twist the dial to scroll through the on-screen menus and press it down to make a selection, and there are some handy shortcut keys to take you straight to specific functions. Sat-nav comes as standard on all trims, although the digital Virtual Cockpit – a 12.3in screen that takes the place of standard analogue instrument dials – costs extra. The driving position is tough to fault, with plenty of seat and steering wheel adjustment and a comfortable sports seat that provides plenty of upper-back support, as well as four-way electric lumbar adjustment.

Clearly, you won’t be considering a coupé if space is your top priority, but the A5 isn’t as impractical as you might imagine. A couple of six-footers will fit in the back easily enough, although they’ll have to slouch to keep their heads from brushing against the ceiling. Officially, there’s more boot space than in a BMW 4 Series or Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé and, while the differences are small, the A5’s load bay is certainly usefully squarer than those of its key rivals. Rear seats that split and fold 40/20/40 are standard and, when down, leave only a gentle slope in the floor of the extended load bay. Front space is much better; even if you’re extremely tall you’re unlikely to have any complaints about how far your seat slides back or how much room there is above your head.

Unsurprisingly, the A5 commands a small premium over an equivalent A4 saloon. The range starts with the 1.4 petrol and tops out with the range-topping S5 Coupé. However, the likely best-selling model will be the entry-level diesel, the 2.0 TDI 190. This is priced on a par with the rival BMW 4 Series, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupé will cost you a little more. For those looking to run an A5 through work, though, CO2 emissions will be just as important. And it’s good news – the most efficient diesel (the Ultra version of the 2.0 TDI 190 with an auto 'box) pumps out 105g/km, which is less than any 4 Series or C-Class Coupé. Entry-level Sport trim is our favourite. It gets 17in alloy wheels, sports seats and LED interior lighting and sat-nav. Bigger 18in alloy wheels, sport suspension, more aggressive S line styling, LED headlights and a sports steering wheel are among the additions when paying extra for S line trim. Unless you love the look, we wouldn’t bother – it pushes up the price considerably. For all the latest reviews, advice and new car deals, sign up to the What Car? newsletter here
