What Car? Reviews

The A6 is quiet, comfortable, spacious and an impressive luxury car all round, even if it isn’t quite as thrilling to drive as the class best

The 2.0 diesel unit is brisk enough, but acceleration feels slightly staid when going for an overtake and it’s the noisiest at low revs. It’s expected to be the best seller in the range, though, and we can see why; although final figures have yet to be announced, it’s likely to offer the best blend of performance and fuel economy. If you want more flexible performance, the 3.0 diesel is much more powerful but very smooth in delivery while being impressively hushed, with a good amount of power for hot-footing along country lanes or powering through motorway miles. The 3.0 petrol, meanwhile, is smoother, quieter and more powerful still, offering the best performance in the current line-up, but it is likely to command a high price and running costs will be equally steep. An advantage of the new hybrid technology is the smoothness of the stop-start system; the starts are now smoother than those in non-hybrid equivalents – and noticeably so. This hybrid system does mean that the A6 is heavier than before, but the smaller one in the 40 TDI model makes the car a hefty 120kg lighter than others in the range. That said, the more powerful cars with bigger hybrid systems do have another two cylinders under their bonnets. The A6’s engines offer similarly impressive performance to the class-leading BMW 5 Series, but that car does have a more comprehensive engine line-up.

Ride

There are four suspension options to choose from. Entry-level Sport trim gets standard steel springs and the option of adaptive dampers or air suspension. S line trim, confusingly, gets stiffer sports suspension as standard, with the option of adaptive dampers or air suspension. We find the adaptive set-up offers the best comfort but, in truth, none of the options offers quite the same level of sophistication and smoothness that you get in a 5 Series. Road imperfections that wouldn’t trouble the 5 Series unsettle the A6 more easily and send subtle shudders through the suspension. Even on a motorway cruise, there is a slightly fidgety nature to the ride – but it is still a very comfortable car and that perhaps says more about how excellent the 5 Series is.

Handling

The steering doesn’t offer the bite and precision of the Jaguar XF, but it’s still predictable and smooth, while body roll is well controlled through corners, even if the A6 doesn't manage its weight through direction changes quite as effortlessly as the 5 Series. You can opt for all-wheel steering; while it adds a bit of sharpness to turn in at faster speeds, it’s hardly noticeable. The far bigger benefit is the reduced turning circle at low speeds (it’s around one metre less with all-wheel steering), making awkward manoeuvres in town much easier. To drive, the A6 may not offer the fulfilling, enjoyable experience of a 5 Series or XF, but it still ensures smooth and relaxing progress – in the luxury car class, this is crucial.

Refinement

  • whatcar star

All of the A6’s engines are subdued at low revs and provide a generally calming driving experience – exactly what you’d hope from a car in this segment. In fact, this is one of the A6’s strong points whether it’s at low speeds around town or cruising on the motorway. Road, wind and engine noise are all kept well out of the interior, while vibrations through the pedals and steering wheel are not noticeable. The gearbox options are slightly disappointing, though. In the 2.0 diesel and 3.0 petrol, you get a seven-speed automatic gearbox as standard, while the 3.0 diesel has an eight-speed transmission. In both cases, the shifts aren’t anywhere near as razor-sharp as the 5 Series’ auto ’box, which is about as good as you can get. The A6’s 'box proves a bit slow to engage at low speeds, while in Dynamic mode it often leaves you hanging onto low gears for longer than you’d like. Manual mode via paddle shifters on the steering wheel is one remedy, but the shifts still feel slow. The control weights frustrate, too. The brake pedal feels especially numb, making smooth stopping at slow speeds difficult to judge. But these aren’t huge misdemeanours and don’t detract from the A6’s relaxed nature.

Driving Position

The driver’s seat is electrically adjustable as standard and offers plenty of adjustment to get comfortable, including lumbar support. Meanwhile, the steering wheel adjusts generously for both height and reach. The infotainment controls are within easy reach for the driver.

Visibility

There’s no problem with the view out from the driver’s seat and the door mirrors are a good size, too. You get blindspot monitoring as standard, as well as excellent LED front and rear lights, while Matrix beam and laser headlights can be chosen on higher-spec models. Front and rear parking sensors, as well as a reversing camera, are also standard.

Infotainment

Audi’s latest MMI dual-screen infotainment system can be found inside the A6, comprising two 8.6in screens. A larger 10.1in top screen is on the options list, while a 12.3in digital driver’s display can also be added. We aren’t particularly impressed with this system, finding it quite convoluted and challenging to use on the move. It’s not really a step forward from Audi’s previous MMI system.

Build Quality

The A6 has a sleekly designed interior with a tremendously high level of build quality, so everything you touch feels very well put together and the materials feel extremely good. It’s nice to look at, too. The only slight criticism is that it does lack a bit of character.

Front Space

Neither the driver nor the front passenger will have any complaints with the space on offer, with plenty of head, leg and shoulder room, along with lots of adjustment to their seats to get comfortable. The impressive space is on a par with that in the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Brnz E-Class. There’s also a useful array of storage compartments around the centre console.

Rear space is generous, with a decent amount of head and leg room to put the A6 on an equal footing with the space on offer in most cars in this class. A couple of tall adults won’t have any problem stretching out and relaxing, although seating three side by side – as you’d expect – would be a bit of a squeeze, especially for the middle passenger, who will have to straddle a transmission tunnel and rear climate controls. There’s also some usefully sized door bins in the back for passengers to store odds and sods.

Seating Flexibility

There’s a good range of adjustment in the front seats, while the rear seats can be folded in a 60/40 arrangement as standard to increase the boot's load-lugging capacity. It’s simple to drop the rear seats down via levers near the headrest and, once down, they lie almost flat. While this is useful, it’s pretty standard for the class.

Boot Space

Despite the hybrid battery being stored in the rear, the A6’s boot remains a decent size, while Audi has provided a bigger opening than in the previous model to help with loading bulky items. Overall, the boot is a similar size to that in the 5 Series and E-Class, so you'll be able to squeeze in plenty of luggage.

Pricing and engine specs have yet to be finalised, but the tech-heavy A6 is likely to be quite a pricey option in this segment. It’s the first luxury car to offer mild hybrid technology across its engine range. Audi claims this tech can improve fuel economy by up to 0.7 litres per 62 miles; this is better than it looks, because the latest A6 was tested under a new system that better reflects real-world driving conditions. However, as it stands, fuel economy is officially worse than an equivalent BMW 5 Series, while CO2 emissions are marginally better.

Final UK specification is still to be announced, but expect entry-level Sport trim to be well equipped, with 18in wheels, climate control, a leather interior and a dual-screen infotainment system, while S line should bring Matrix LED lights, a sporty bodykit and bigger wheels. You can add an array of autonomous driving features to the A6 that have been borrowed from the A8. However, like the latter, the most advanced self-driving modes aren’t able to be used on public roads just yet. So the best system you can currently get is adaptive cruise control with steer assist – a useful tool for high-mileage drivers.

Audi finished a respectable 12th place out of 32 manufacturers in our latest reliability survey, putting the brand well above BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar. There’s also good news for the A6, which finished second in its class, behind only its much more expensive A8 sibling. That result applies to the previous A6, but it bodes well for the latest model nonetheless.

Safety And Security

The latest A6 has yet to be tested by Euro NCAP, but it gets automatic emergency braking as standard, while other safety features – such as lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control – can be added. Since the previous model achieved a five-star Euro NCAP rating, it’s likely the new version will also perform well. Thatcham Research has also yet to test the car for security, but It gets everything you’d hope a modern car to get to prevent theft, including central locking and an alarm.
