The CLA is based on the A-Class hatchback, so it unsurprisingly inherits many of that car’s traits. Chief among which is an unsettled and crashy ride, particularly on versions fitted with sports suspension. However, even with comfort suspension (confusingly fitted as standard to entry-level Sport trim models) larger bumps and potholes send unpleasant jolts through the cabin around town. Things do improve the faster you go, although at motorway speeds there’s far too much wind and road noise. The CLA’s manual gearbox is also annoyingly notchy and imprecise, and, while the optional seven-speed automatic is preferable, it’s still a bit slow-witted and jerky. Rivals such as the Audi A4 Avant and BMW 3 Series Touring are also more controlled and composed in bends, although the CLA is far from sloppy and its steering is nicely weighted. Versions with sports suspension lean noticeably less through corners, although we don’t think that’s worth the degradation in ride quality. The 1.6-litre petrol engine in the CLA 180 is reasonably smooth although you do need to rev it quite hard if you want to get anywhere in a hurry. Meanwhile, the 2.1-litre diesel engine in the CLA 200 d is much stronger at low revs, but very noisy. The 2.1-litre diesel in the CLA 220 d is stronger still but just as uncouth.

The CLA Shooting Brake is virtually indistinguishable from the cheaper A-Class when you’re sitting in the driver’s seat. The dashboard is smartly styled, with heater vents similar to those that featured in the old SLS supercar, and there's a 7.0-inch iPad-style display 'floating' on top of the dashboard. The interior materials aren't as plush as those in an Audi A4 Avant or even a BMW 3 Series Touring, though, and there’s a curiously large gap between the B-pillar and the front door trim, through which you can clearly see the car's bodywork. At least the dashboard doesn’t feel too cheap or plastiky. As with larger Mercedes models, you operate the infotainment system by twisting and pressing a rotary dial between the front seats. However, the on-screen menus aren't especially logical, so the system can be frustrating, and even distracting, to use while you’re driving. It’s also disappointing that sat-nav and a DAB cost extra on most trims. The optional 8.0in Comand infotainment system is slightly more intuitive, but not by enough to justify its extra cost. Meanwhile, adjusting the driver’s seat is fiddly (unless you add electric seats) and the pedals don’t line up very well with the steering wheel (especially on versions with a manual gearbox) forcing you to sit at an uncomfortable angle much of the time. Rear visibility could also be better, although at least you get parking sensors on all trims to help mitigate this.

Four six-footers will fit easily enough if they aren’t too long in the body, although there is considerably more space (particularly head room) in the back seats of an Audi A4 Avant or a BMW 3 Series Touring. You also have to be careful not to bump your head when getting into the back of the CLA, because the swooping roofline cuts into the rear door openings. The CLA's dramatic styling means the boot opening is quite narrow, and the load bay itself shallow compared with rival estates’, including the A4 Avant. There’s also a hefty lip to negotiate at the entrance. However, there’s still plenty of space inside for a few suitcases or a couple of buggies, and the Shooting Brake is considerably more practical than the CLA saloon on which it’s based. Folding the rear seats is done using levers beside the rear headrests. The seatbacks split 60/40 and lie pretty much flat without any annoying steps or ridges. All versions of the CLA Shooting Brake also come with a powered tailgate to save you the hassle of lifting it up and slamming it shut again.

The CLA Shooting Brake proves that estates don’t have to be boxy. However, in order to achieve those sleek and swooping looks, there’s no question Mercedes’ designers have had to sacrifice some practicality. Put simply, if you just want a big boot and lots of rear space, the similarly priced Audi A4 Avant is a much better buy. Alternatively, the Skoda Superb Estate is even cheaper and roomier if you can live without a premium badge. Still, if you’re sold on the CLA’s swooping looks and you’re buying privately, the entry-level CLA 180 is the one to go for; it’s reasonably economical for a petrol and keeps the price reasonable. The diesel CLA 200 d (with optional automatic gearbox) is a better bet if you’re a company car driver thanks to its lower CO2 emissions. The CLA 220 d and CLA 250 are too pricey to recommend. We’d recommend sticking with entry-level Sport trim. You get 18in alloys, cruise control, manmade leather seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless start and a powered tailgate as standard, whereas the posher trims push up the CLA’s price considerably. Disappointingly, the CLA Shooting Brake doesn’t have automatic emergency to stop you from accidently running into the car in front. However, there are lots of other safety aids, including seven airbags and attention assist, a system that alerts you if you’re getting too tired to drive. Blindspot monitoring is on the options list.
