One of the great benefits of an electric car is the absence of any gears, meaning smooth, nippy acceleration the instant you squeeze the accelerator pedal. This slightly eerie, uninterrupted stream of power is what makes the Zoe relaxing but, surprisingly, also quite fun to drive around town. Mind you, the grabby brakes do frustrate; they make it difficult to slow your progress smoothly as they try to harvest energy to recharge the battery. The Zoe is available with either an 87bhp or a 107bhp electric motor; the former is called the Q90 and the latter the R110. You don't notice much difference in performance at low speeds, but above 40mph the Q90's nippy acceleration quickly starts to tail off, whereas the R110 will get you up to 70mph noticeably more swiftly. Still, more powerful rivals, such as the Nissan Leaf, Volkswagen e-Golf and BMW i3, are better suited to outside-lane motorway driving. Ride comfort is okay at low speeds; broken surfaces are absorbed effectively and with little suspension thump. However, the Zoe is less composed on faster roads, where ruts and potholes unsettle the car a little too easily. It's still more comfortable than the i3, but the e-Golf smooths over bumps far more adroitly. The Zoe turns in to corners keenly enough, helped by its light and precise steering, and there’s plenty of grip. The soft suspension does mean substantial body lean, but the Zoe never lurches around wildly. Compared with any petrol or diesel rival, the Zoe is extremely hushed, because the electric motor only makes a subtle whine. However, by electric standards, it isn't actually that refined, generating more wind and road noise than rivals such as the Leaf and, particularly, the e-Golf.

You sit quite high up in the Zoe and the fact that you can't lower the driver's seat will prove an irritatation for taller drivers. However, there’s enough movement in the seat and steering wheel to allow most drivers to get comfortable. Your view out of the front is largely unobstructed and, although the rear pillars do block some of the view when looking over your shoulder, rear parking sensors are standard. Go for range-topping Signature trim and you'll even get a reversing camera. There's a 7.0in colour touchscreen in the centre of the dashboard that you use to control the radio, Bluetooth and sat-nav systems. It's reasonably intuitive, although the equivalent touchscreens in other electric cars, such as the Nissan Leaf and Volkswagen e-Golf, are even more user-friendly. You get a DAB radio and Android Auto (not Apple CarPlay) smartphone mirroring as standard, while upgrading to Signature trim also brings a punchy Bose sound system. The Zoe's interior feels reasonably well constructed, but there are some rather cheap-feeling plastics on show, particularly around the door handles and handbrake. A Leaf is smarter inside, but if you want a genuinely classy interior you'll need to fork out for an e-Golf or a BMW i3.

There’s enough space in the front for tall adults to get comfortable. With a convenient tray below the touchscreen to stow your phone, a couple of small cupholders and a shallow cubby for pens and other oddments above the glovebox, your storage needs should be met, too. Adults sitting in the back will be a bit squeezed for head room and, if there’s a taller person sitting in front, leg room will be limited as well. A Volkswagen e-Golf or Nissan Leaf is much more accommodating. That said, rear access is good (five doors are standard) and kids will be more than comfortable – even on longer journeys. The Zoe is cleverly packaged to include a substantial boot that's roughly the same size as the e-Golf's. You'll easily be able to carry a small buggy or big weekly shop, although you'll fit even more in the boot of a Leaf. There's an annoyingly big lip at the boot entrance, though, and it's also a shame that the rear seatbacks fold in one big clumsy piece, rather than the more convenient 60/40 split you get in most small cars.

Choose a Zoe as your company car and your tax bills will be cheaper than most petrol or diesel alternatives. However, you need to make sure you can live with the limited range – it's actually very good by electric car standards but it might still cause you the occasional headache. Renault actually provides two ranges: 174 miles in the summer and 112 miles in the winter for the Q90. For the more powerful R110, those numbers rise to 186 miles and 124 miles respectively. However, in our relatively cold weather tests (3-5deg C), even the Q90 still managed an impressive 131 miles on a full charge. However, as with all electric cars, the Zoe's range does drop dramatically at faster motorway speeds. Charging the Zoe from empty takes seven to eight hours from empty if you plug it into your 7kW charger at home (Renault will install one free of charge), or 2hr 40min from a 22kW charging point. The Q90 even has a special quick charge feature that allows the battery to be topped up to 80% from empty in just 65 minutes from a high-powered 43kW charging point. The more powerful R110 can't accept such a high rate of charge; the same 0-80% battery top-up takes 1hr 40min. You can buy the whole car outright (called the Zoe i), but we'd recommend you lease the battery separately. This requires a considerably lower upfront cost and also means Renault is responsible for the condition of the battery; you'll get a new one free of charge if the range drops below 75% of what it was when the car was new – regardless of how old the car is. This only applies for the first five years or 60,000 miles (whichever comes first) if you buy the car and battery together. Most other parts of the Zoe are covered by a three-year warranty, which is unlimited during the first 24 months but restricted to 100,000 miles in the final year.
