Right now, this latest V60 is available with three engines: two 2.0-litre diesels (the D3 model has 148bhp, while D4 squeezes out 187bhp) and a 247bhp turbocharged petrol badged T5. These will be joined by a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid later in 2018. So far, we’ve driven only the D4. It’s rated to do the 0-62mph sprint in 7.9sec, which is competitive and sounds plenty, but the reality is that, at full chat, it doesn’t feel quite as nippy as the Mercedes-Benz C220d Estate or Audi A4 Avant 2.0 TDI 190. But when you’re not trying to win drag races, you’ll find the pace it offers quite sufficient; indeed, the V60 generates more than enough low to mid-range verve for effortlessly bumbling through town or plodding mile after mile up the motorway stress-free. Yet the V60 has an Achilles heel: its eight-speed automatic gearbox. As with other Volvos, this tends to dither when you ask for a burst of acceleration – something that you have to factor into your driving technique if you don’t want to get caught short pulling out of junctions or going for an overtake. If you fancy something more alert, and you can put up with changing your own gears, there’s always the alternative six-speed manual ’box instead. While this doesn’t have the most tactile of shifts, it has a reasonably short throw and is easy to slot into the correct gear. We just wish the clutch pedal had a bit more feel – it can be rather tricky to find the biting point. When it comes to four-cylinder diesel engines, nothing gets near to matching the hushed tones of an A4, yet the four-cylinder V60 D4 is a commendable second. It’s certainly more vocal than the A4, particularly when you give it a boot full of acceleration, but it’s never harsh or hostile and is far less grumbly than its C-Class or BMW 3 Series counterparts. Elsewhere, the A4 pips the V60 for hushed progress. Even though the versions we’ve tried had optional acoustic glass fitted, you can still hear more flutter from wind over the door mirrors than you would in an A4. Mind you, road and suspension noise are mostly well damped out, so the V60 is still a largely hushed experience for big-mile jaunts. The V60 strikes a happy balance with its ride – assuming you’ve got the right suspension box ticked. With standard suspension and 17in or 18in wheels (like you’d find on Momentum and Momentum Pro models respectively), the V60 is impressive. Over gentle bumps – sleeping policemen or undulating dips and crest on country roads, for instance – body movements are tightly checked, so it won’t make your passengers bilious; yet it still copes well when you strike something harsher, such as a pointy pothole. However, opt for 19in wheels and adaptive suspension, and you’ll find the V60’s character changes for the worse. Even in Comfort mode, the car fidgets over all but the smoothest of surfaces, while vertical movements over crests and compressions are far too sudden. Stick it in Dynamic and it’s far too firm for the majority of UK roads. The good news is that the V60 handles well on 18in and 19in wheels – and not just for a Volvo. Okay, you won’t get the pin-sharp dynamics and rear-wheel drive antics of a well-specced 3 Series Touring, but the front-wheel-drive V60 steers lightly in town, deftly on country lanes and tracks assuredly straight on motorways. Meanwhile, the body stays planted and the tyres deliver good grip when you press on. Opt for 17in wheels and you’ll find the handling is more wallowy – that’s the price you pay for the additional comfort. There will also be four-wheel-drive versions available further down the line.

As is typical with Volvo, you get a supremely comfortable driver’s seat with power adjustment if you step up to Inscription or any Pro trim. Most importantly, whichever version you choose, you will find bundles of movement to the seat and steering wheel; and because the pedals line up perfectly with both, you feel wonderfully relaxed behind the wheel. That’s not always the case with its rivals, because the Audi A4 Avant, Mercedes C-Class Estate and BMW 3 Series Touring all serve up slightly offset pedals and/or bulges in their transmission tunnels. Seeing out is fairly easy, thanks to relatively thin front and rear pillars, plus you get rear parking sensors standard on all models (front parking sensors, a rear-view camera and a 360deg camera system are available). It’s easy to see at night, too, because high-intensity LED headlights are fitted to all models, with adaptive LED headlights standard on higher trims. All V60s come with a 12.3in screen that replaces traditional analogue dials for digital instruments that you’d have to pay extra for in an A4. However, in the V60, these digital instruments aren’t quite as configurable as Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, but they still deliver plenty of useful information – including media, telephone and navigation data – right in front of the driver. A head-up display is standard on Momentum Pro and Inscription Pro trims, to help keep you focused on the road ahead. Volvo is making quite a name for itself when it comes to great interiors and the V60 is no exception. Material quality is very near to the benchmark A4’s in terms of sturdiness and is better than that of the C-Class and 3 Series. And despite its minimalist Scandi design, the interior is sumptuous, as well as light and airy next to its often glummer German equals. Mind you, minimalism has its drawbacks. As with other Volvos, the dashboard is ruled by a 9.0in tablet-style touchscreen that has allowed the designers to slash the number of buttons to create an uncluttered feel. While it looks great, you tend to miss the intuitiveness and less distracting nature of physical buttons. You see, swiping, pinching and scrolling – just like you do with an iPad – is fine when you’re stationary; on the move, it means simple tasks, such as changing the radio station or tapping an address into the sat-nav, require you to glance away from the road. That’s why we prefer the less distracting rotary dial-controlled infotainment systems that Audi and BMW use. Still, at least the screen is ultra-sharp and there is a voice-activated system to operate some functions. You also get plenty of features, including standard sat-nav and a DAB radio. There’s also Volvo On Call, an app that lets you operate certain functions from your smartphone – for example, to remotely preheat or cool the interior, or send an address to the sat-nav. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring are available as an option. The default stereo is a 10-speaker system, which audio buffs can upgrade to a punchier 600W, 14-speaker Harman Kardon unit. Those who are really serious about their music have the further option of a Bowers & Wilkins system with 15 speakers and 1100W – but be warned, it’s not cheap.

There’s no doubting that the standard steel roof is the best for lanky occupants; the optional panoramic glass sunroof may shower the interior with sunlight, but it also nicks quite a bit of head room. It’s not too bad, but if you’re well over six feet tall, it’s something to think about before placing your order. Otherwise, front leg room is first class, as is the interior width, so you can get your elbow out without irking your passenger. It’s the same story in the rear. That panoramic roof can make taller folk feel a little hemmed in, but leg room is much better than that in its chief rivals, such as the Audi A4 Avant, Mercedes C-Class Estate and BMW 3 Series Touring. Indeed, the only estate with more space at this price is the Skoda Superb. Storage space is generally good, with plenty of sizeable cubbies, compartments and a decent glovebox, although the doors bins are a little small. It’s also worth pointing out that the optional CD player eats into the cubby under the centre armrest. If you’re thinking the SUV route is the only way to get a decent boot these days, think again: the V60 is a worthy alternative. The standard electrically operated tailgate opens to reveal 529 litres of space with the rear seats up – that’s more than its obvious rivals and easily enough to cope with buggies or a couple of large suitcases. There’s more space available under the floor if you don’t order a spare wheel and, of course, you can drop the rear seats to make even more space for longer items. The seats fold completely flat to the floor and, if you option the Convenience Pack, can be done by simply pressing a couple of buttons just inside the tailgate. This pack also adds a flip-up load bar divider with hooks to hang your shopping bags and a 12V socket in the boot. It’s an option that’s well worth having.

If you keep a beady eye on costs, then the V60 is worth your attention. Generally, like for like, it’s no pricier to buy in cash than its chief rivals from Mercedes, BMW and Audi, yet it comes stacked with standard equipment. If you prefer the finance route, the V60 is exceedingly competitive for both PCP and leasing. The V60 is also predicted to hold onto a solid chunk of its value when it comes to reselling three years down the line. In fact, the car should keep its value about as well as an Audi A4 Avant and considerably better than a Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate or BMW 3 Series Touring. The D3 variant’s CO2 emissions are no better than the more powerful D4’s, making the latter a tempting choice for company car drivers. In our book, the D4’s extra oomph makes it the engine to choose for private buyers, too, and – on paper at least – it shouldn’t cost you much more in fuel. But whether it’s CO2 emissions or fuel economy you’re most concerned about, the D4 will be lighter on your wallet than a 320d Touring; the A4 Avant 2.0 TDI 190 Ultra is the most efficient option with equivalent power, though. Stick to entry-level Momentum trim for the best value. This has more than enough gubbins to keep the gadget lovers entertained, as well as plenty of luxuries, such as a 9.0in touchscreen with sat-nav, a 10-speaker stereo, LED headlights, rear parking sensors, a power-operated tailgate and dual-zone climate control. It’s worth considering a few options, though, such as the Convenience Pack, smartphone mirroring, adaptive LED headlights and extra safety kit (see below). Metallic paint is almost always essential for the best resale values. At the time of writing, the latest V60 hasn’t been crash tested by Euro NCAP. However, because the results for Volvo models built from the same underpinnings are class-leading, we doubt very much that there’ll be any concerns and a five-star rating will be forthcoming. As standard, the V60 gets automatic emergency braking (this will detect cars, pedestrians and large animals), traffic sign recognition, oncoming lane mitigation (to help avoid a head-on collision) and lane-keep assist. The optional Intellisafe Pro pack includes blindspot warning and Pilot Assist (adaptive cruise control that also includes steering control) and is worth considering. It is rather pricey, though. There’s less to get excited about concerning Volvo’s reliability. As a manufacturer, the brand finished 25th out of 32 manufacturers in our latest reliability survey. For the record, that is behind all of its main rivals; but let’s hope the V60 improves on that. Either way, you will have the peace of mind of a three-year, 60,000-mile manufacturer’s warranty and free breakdown cover.
