Before we get into the nitty-gritty of how the car drives, we need to address the elephant in the room: its weight. You see, despite looking a bit like an F-Type, underneath its designer suit the E-Pace has far more in common with Land Rover’s Discovery Sport. True, the engineers have shaved off a few pounds by making the tailgate, bonnet, roof and front wings out of aluminium, but the E-Pace still tips the scales at a hefty 1.8 tonnes – around 85kg more than the larger F-Pace. Unsurprisingly, then, the 178bhp 2.0-litre diesel model isn’t exactly rapid. Floor the accelerator and, even once the slow-witted nine-speed automatic gearbox has decided on a ratio, you accelerate with all the urgency of an asthmatic runner. Things improve once you've built up a few revs but, even so, the E-Pace never feels a match for equivalent versions of the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40. There is an even less powerful diesel, the 148bhp 2.0-litre unit, which is available in front-wheel drive and can be had with a six-speed manual gearbox. Obviously, it’s slower than the 178bhp version, but not by a great deal. If you want diesel and pace is your primary concern, there’s a 237bhp option, but predictably it’s expensive and not as economical as the others. The range-topping 298bhp 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine goes some way to injecting some serious pace into the line-up. It’s lighter and revvier than the diesels and imbues the E-Pace with the performance you'd expect from a sporty SUV. But should you plan on regularly exercising your right foot, be aware that this is a 35.3mpg car in official tests. In the real world, you’ll struggle to achieve more than 25mpg. The 247bhp petrol version, meanwhile, is also very punchy and feels a lot sharper and smoother than the diesel variants, but it’s pricey.

Ride

Although you can get the E-Pace on 17in and 18in wheels in the lower trim levels, we’ve so far only tried versions on 19in and whopping 20in wheels that are standard on SE and HSE respectively. Even with these big wheels, the E-Pace isn’t horrendously firm and only crashes over the worst potholes. However, you are jostled around quite a bit along pockmarked and beaten-up urban roads. The ride doesn’t settle out on the open road, either; even on the motorway, things are far less settled than in an XC40 on the same 20in wheels. This can get tiresome after a while – something to consider if you’re only planning a brief test drive. Adaptive dampers are available (we have yet to try them) and that might improve things. Smaller wheels are likely to do so, too. The trouble is, you might think the E-Pace looks a bit dumpy without its wheel arches properly filled.

Handling

If there's one area Jaguar can always be relied on to deliver, it's handling. And the E-Pace lives up to that reputation – to a point, at least. It’s taller and heavier than rivals such as the X1 and Audi Q3, so isn’t quite as eager to turn in to bends as those cars. Nevertheless, it still stays pretty upright through tight twists, grips well and stays neatly balanced. Around town, that steering can feel quite heavy, making the E-Pace harder work to manoeuvre than some rivals, including the XC40. However, along faster, twisting roads, that heft actually gives you confidence. Most versions come with all-wheel drive that predictably offers plenty of grip, although you can opt for the entry-level diesel engine with front-wheel drive. In that guise, the E-Pace’s handling isn’t quite so assured; the steering wheel squirms under your hands if you accelerate eagerly through corners – something that you don’t find in the four-wheel-drive versions. That said, it is only in quick corners, or in bad weather, that you really feel the benefit of the four-wheel drive system.

Refinement

You feel a surprising amount of vibration through the diesel E-Pace's pedals and steering wheel. You could argue that this is just about acceptable in the Discovery Sport – a car built on utilitarian principles – but, in a Jaguar, you expect a little more polish. The gruff engine note is still audible at a steady 70mph cruise and there’s some wind noise around the mirrors and windscreen. Still, there isn’t much road noise, so the E-Pace is, overall, a quieter cruising companion than the Q3 or X1. The XC40 is quieter still, though. Of the diesels, the entry-level 148bhp 2.0-litre engine is the quietest, but the petrols are unsurprisingly smoother and quieter than all the diesels. It’s just a shame that they don’t sound a bit sweeter when you rev them out. The six-speed manual gearbox available on some engines isn't too notchy, but we'd still go for the automatic. The latter shifts smoothly on the move, even if it does dither when pulling onto roundabouts and the like.

Driving Position

As with the exterior, the interior of the E-Pace was clearly inspired by the F-Type. That car's low grab rail has made it in, along with the joystick-style lever for the automatic gearbox rather than the rotary selector that features in the larger F-Pace. It’s a clean and handsome layout that’s surprisingly user-friendly. The dials for the air conditioning are a doddle to use and you sit suitably high up, whereas in rivals such as the Audi Q3 and BMW X1 you could almost be sitting behind the wheel of a regular hatchback. Better still, on all but the entry-level trim, you get electrically adjustable front seats that make it super-easy to fine-tune your driving position.

Visibility

That lofty driving position gives you a good view of the road ahead and seeing out of the side windows at junctions and roundabouts isn’t too hard, either. We just wish the windscreen pillars were a bit thinner. The view out of the back of the E-Pace is rather less impressive. However, all versions come with a reversing camera to get around this, along with front and rear sensors. Upgrade to S trim or above and you’ll get a 360deg aid to make parking even easier. Should you want to make sure your wheels stay uncurbed and paintwork scratch-free, there’s a surround-view camera system on the options list.

Infotainment

All versions of the E-Pace come with a 10.0in touchscreen infotainment system that Jaguar calls Touch Pro. It’s relatively snappy to respond when you prod it, the graphics are sharp and the interface reasonably easy to get your head around. Mind you, some of the icons are small so can be a bit tricky to hit with any degree of confidence on the move. And there’s no doubt that the X1's infotainment system, which utilises a rotary controller instead of a touchscreen, is much less distracting. You get a DAB radio, Bluetooth and a couple of USB sockets as standard, along with a relatively weedy 125W sound system. Upgrade to S trim and you’ll also get sat-nav, while SE models get a punchier 380W Meridian sound system. Options include an even more powerful 825W sound system and a TV, although it’s a real pity that you can’t add Apple CarPlay or Android Auto smartphone mirroring.

Build Quality

The one area that Jaguar interiors always seem to fall short compared with rivals' is their perceived quality. True, the E-Pace looks posh inside, but it doesn’t hold up particularly brilliantly on closer inspection. From the dashboard that's wrapped in vinyl to some of the more questionable plastics and switches, the E-Pace simply isn’t as classy inside as the best rivals, including the X1 and Volvo XC40. However, the E-Pace stops short of feeling cheap inside, and at least the leather on the steering wheel is suitably fine-grain.

Front Space

So far, all the E-Paces we’ve tried have been fitted with a panoramic roof – a feature that almost always impacts on head room. Even so, you’d have to be very tall to notice your barnet brushing the E-Pace’s ceiling, while the front seats slide back far enough to accommodate anyone long in the leg. There’s also plenty of width to ensure you won’t be shoulder to shoulder with your passenger. The front door pockets are rather slender, but there’s a small tray in front of the gearlever to stow your phone, plus a couple of cupholders in front of the central armrest. Look under this armrest and you’ll find a giant cubbyhole, while the cupholders can be popped out for even more storage space.

Rear Space

The E-Pace has enough rear leg room to keep tallish adults fairly happy, provided they’re not sitting behind six-footers. If you do have someone vertically gifted in front of you and you’re similarly blessed, then you may find your knees digging into the front seatbacks. That said, rivals such as the BMW X1, Volkswagen Tiguan and Volvo XC40 are considerably more accommodating in this area. Head room is better; even taller adults are unlikely to find their head brushing the roof. That’s impressive considering all E-Paces we’ve tried have been fitted with panoramic roofs. Thanks to a flat, bench-style seat, three smaller adults should be able to sit side by side in relative comfort, but they’d feel less squished in the X1 or XC40.

Seating Flexibility

While rivals such as the X1 and Tiguan are available with sliding and reclining rear seats, the E-Pace isn’t anywhere near as clever. Nope, its rear seats are the same as those in most conventional hatchbacks – that is, they can be folded down in a 60/40 split. A 10-way electric front passenger seat is standard on S trim and above, while SE and HSE models come with an even greater range of electric seat adjustment.

Boot Space

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

Here’s an example of why you can’t always trust official boot capacity figures. You see, Jaguar claims 577 litres (with the rear seats up), suggesting the E-Pace can carry more luggage than an X1. In fact, the opposite is true. The boot is far from poky, though. You can still (quite easily) fit six carry-on suitcases inside – more than you would in an Audi Q3. The load area is a nice square shape, too, with a wider recess right at the back of the car – a handy feature if you play golf. There’s no lip to speak of at the boot entrance and there’s a small amount of underfloor storage. Fold down the rear seats and they lie almost – but not quite – flat. The extended load area is big enough for most family chores, although, again, rivals including the X1 and Tiguan will carry more.

Running Costs

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

The E-Pace costs a bit more to buy than many rivals, including the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40. However, the flipside is that it’s predicted to hold onto its value for longer than its peers, helping to reduce the amount it will cost you to own in the long run. If you’re buying on PCP finance, monthly fees won’t be as high you might expect, although an equivalent XC40 will still cost you considerably less. While leasing rates are competitive for company car users, expect to pay more in benefit-in-kind tax due to relatively high CO2 emissions. We have yet to put the E-Pace through our real-world True MPG tests. Claimed fuel economy isn’t anything to write home about, though, with the biggest-selling 178bhp diesel with an automatic gearbox promising an average of just over 50mpg. Expect a fair bit less in the real world, however.

Equipment

Choosing a trim level for your E-Pace is a two-stage affair. First, you have to choose whether you like the look of the standard car or prefer the sportier styling of the R-Dynamic version. The latter gets you a more aggressive bodykit, satin chrome side vents, a gloss-black grille and twin tailpipes. After you’ve made that decision, then you have to decide how much equipment you want. All versions come with dual-zone climate control, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors and LED headlights, but we’d recommend spending a bit extra on the S trim, which adds leather seats (electrically adjustable in the front) and a more sophisticated infotainment system. SE and HSE trim packs add bigger wheels, more electric seats adjustment and increasingly more safety kit. Unfortunately, going for one of these means paying a price that could get you into an altogether bigger and better SUV.

Reliability

Jaguar didn’t do particularly well in our most recent reliability survey, finishing a disappointing 26th out of 32 manufacturers. The E-Pace itself was too new to feature. Like all Jaguars, the E-Pace comes with a three-year warranty as standard, although this can be extended if you’re prepared to pay extra.

Safety And Security

The E-Pace is, quite simply, one of the safest cars in the class. All models come with automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist and a system that monitors how tired the driver is. Upgrade to S trim and you’ll also get traffic sign recognition, while SE versions and above add high-speed emergency braking and blindspot monitoring to that list. Unsurprisingly, Euro NCAP dished out the full five-star safety rating for the E-Pace, although it’s hard to compare the breakdown of individual scores with those of rivals such as the X1 and Volkswagen Tiguan. That’s because the E-Pace was tested under a newer, more stringent set of criteria. For all the latest reviews, advice and new car deals, sign up to the What Car? newsletter here
