Performance

The 5 Series Touring’s performance is every bit as impressive as its saloon stablemate. Our choice is the 187bhp 2.0-litre 520d diesel, because it blends frugality with more than enough pace to haul along you and a fully loaded car with ease; it’s an eager beaver sprinting away from a standstill and will whiz you up to motorway speeds from low revs without complaint. That said, you'll have an even more fabulous experience if you go for the 261bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder 530d diesel. It's inherently smoother than the four-cylinder 520d, while displaying a near-instantaneous muscularity across its rev range that even the talented 520d can't match – but it is more expensive. There is also a 525d, which is a 228bhp version of the 2.0-litre diesel, as well as a brace of petrols. These comprise the 2.0-litre four-cylinder motors with 182bhp in the 520i and 249bhp in the 530i, plus a sweet 335bhp 3.0-litre six-cylinder that can speed you from rest to 62mph in just 5.1sec. All engines are paired with BMW's eight-speed automatic gearbox that flicks swiftly between gears on its own or responds promptly to pulls on the manual paddles behind the steering wheel.

Ride

The way the 5 Series Touring rides depends largely on whether you specify the standard suspension, the stiffer M Sport set-up or do what we’d suggest and tick the box for the optional adaptive dampers, called Variable Damper Control (VDC). This isn’t cheap, but it's definitely worth the extra. Without it, the 5 Series Touring is supple enough over big bumps around town, but there’s always an underlying shimmy through the car on anything other than super-smooth roads, particularly if you opt for 19in alloys, M Sport suspension or run-flat tyres. If you do lots of motorway miles, you’ll probably find this quite annoying. Cars with VDC, however, are even more forgiving at low speeds and they ride in a much more sophisticated fashion along pockmarked British A-roads and motorways – especially if you soften the dampers by pressing the Comfort button next to the gearlever. And the good news is that the settings are the same whether you opt for SE or M Sport trim. It’s worth pointing out that all its rivals, including the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and Volvo V90, also need an equivalent form of pricey adaptive suspension fitted to achieve their best ride quality. One word of warning: if you do spend the money on VDC, don’t undo all its goodness by specifying really big alloys or run-flat tyres.

Handling

The 5 Series Touring has dynamic prowess – it’s better in the bends than an Audi A6 and up there with th eE-Class and V90 – but it’s not quite as scintillating to scythe through corners as the sweet-handling Jaguar XF Sportbrake or even the lighter 5 Series Saloon. All models feel well balanced, while xDrive versions with four-wheel drive have tremendous traction, even in poor weather conditions. Switch to the firmer, more responsive Sport mode and the 5 Series Touring’s steering feels more consistently weighted and precise, and there's genuine enjoyment to be had flowing the car from one corner to the next. But when pushed to its limits, those front tyres want to wash wide sooner than the saloon’s. Adaptive dampers are an optional extra that allow you to firm up the suspension. This reduces body roll during hard cornering and makes the car keener to switch direction. You can also get rear-wheel steering as an option that brings a few advantages: at low to medium speeds the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to those at the front, reducing the turning circle and making the car easier to park, plus improving the feeling of agility in corners; at higher speeds, they turn in the same direction to the front wheels, helping high-speed stability.

Refinement

There’s a slight diesel gruffness to the four-cylinder 520d compared with an A6 2.0 TDI, but besides that it’s much quieter than a V90 at idle or an E220d if you’re accelerating hard. It transmits no perceptible vibration to annoyingly buzz the controls, either. However, the six-cylinder 530d diesel is an even nicer companion, sounding smoother and pleasantly throatier than the 520d. Happily, the 5 Series Touring is exceptional at keeping road and wind noise outside, meaning long motorway journeys are never taxing. Just remember that bigger wheels will generate more road roar than smaller items.

Driving Position

Every 5 Series Touring gets a comfortable and reasonably supportive driver’s seat, which includes electric seat height and backrest angle adjustment, while M Sport models have bigger side bolsters to hold you in place more securely when cornering quickly. There’s also plenty of steering wheel adjustment. Fully electrically adjustable seats with memory settings are, unsurprisingly, an optional extra, but it’s disappointing that you also have to pay extra for lumbar adjustment, even on the most expensive trims. The dashboard is clearly laid out and all the controls are within easy reach. In this area, the 5 Series Touring is better than its closest rival, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate, although the margins aren’t huge.

Visibility

Seeing out of the 5 Series Touring forward and over its bonnet is no problem at all, thanks to relatively slender front pillars and the tall, wide windscreen. It’s the same story when looking to the right and left at roundabouts and junctions. With a shallower rear screen than an E-Class Estate and relatively thick rear pillars, reversing the 5 Series Touring might be tricky if it weren’t for the standard front and rear parking sensors; these make parking reasonably drama free. A reversing camera and a self-parking system are available as optional extras on all models, as is a 360deg bird’s-eye-view monitor. The standard LED headlights in the 5 Series Touring are very good, but you can upgrade them to even better lights that turn with the steering wheel and provide automatic high-beam assist.

Infotainment

Every 5 Series comes with BMW’s range-topping Professional Multimedia system, which brings a whopping 10.2in widescreen, sat-nav, various online services, a DAB radio and even a built-in 20GB hard drive to store your music on. The screen is touch-sensitive; however, you can also operate it using the rotary dial and shortcut buttons between the front seats. The latter method is much easier (and safer) than using the touchscreen when you’re driving, because you just twist the dial to scroll through the on-screen menus and press down to make a selection. It helps that the menu system is logical and easy to get the hang of. On the options list, you’ll find wireless mobile phone charging, Microsoft Office Exchange connectivity, a range of increasingly powerful sound systems, a wi-fi hotspot, a digital TV and Apple CarPlay, the latter of which lets you sync up your iPhone and use some of its functions on the move. There’s even a gesture control feature, which allows you to operate certain functions using mid-air hand signals. This may sound like a good idea, but it’s far easier to use the physical controls instead.

Build Quality

There’s no danger of you feeling short-changed on quality when climbing into your new 5 Series Touring. All the materials, even those lower down that you’ll rarely come into contact with, look and feel of suitably high quality. Most of the buttons and switches are nicely damped, too. There are different trim inserts – including wood and gloss-black – that run the length of the dashboard and around the doors, and they all look and feel upmarket. Standard ambient lighting gives off a luxuriant glow after dark. Some might argue that the 5 Series Touring’s rather 'generic BMW' interior styling isn’t that exciting. If that’s you, then you might find an E-Class Estate’s interior more spectacular, albeit a little flimsier in places, or perhaps the V90’s minimalist elegance will woo you instead. Ultimately, it's a question of preference.

Front Space

The 5 Series Touring is just as roomy as key rivals, such the Audi A6 Avant, Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate and Volvo V90, so you’re unlikely to have any issues with head room. And because the front seats slide back a long way, leg room won’t be a problem, either. Storage options are good; the glovebox is big and there’s a lidded cubby behind the gearlever with USB ports that’ll take a wallet, keys or a mobile phone, along with two cupholders. In front of the gearlever is a tray that’s the perfect size and shape for a smartphone. This can be turned into a wireless charging tray if you tick that option box. Both door pockets will accommodate a small water bottle, but that’s about it.

Rear Space

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

If you want the roomiest rear seats, then hands down the V90 is a better bet than the 5 Series Touring. That said, both head and leg room are still good enough for 6ft adults sitting behind similar-sized folk up front, and it has a touch more knee room and lots more foot space under the front seats than an E-Class Estate, making the 5 Series Touring a more relaxing place in which to chill out in the back. There’s a tall central tunnel in the floor for a middle passenger to clamber over, though, and if you’re trying to fit three burly fellas side by side, then shoulder room will be tight. That said, it would be a similar story in any of its rivals.

Seating Flexibility

Just like the driver’s seat, the front passenger seat has electrically adjustable height and backrest angle as standard, making it easy to fine-tune the perfect position. It’s disappointing that electrically adjustable lumbar support costs extra, though – even on the more expensive trims. With handy electric release buttons just inside the tailgate opening, you can flip down the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats easily; V90 owners have to make do with less useful 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

Boot Space

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

The 5 Series Touring's boot is a good square shape and, with a 570-litre capacity (with the rear seats in place), it’s marginally larger than the A6 Avant's and V90's. There’s also some extra luggage space under the boot floor that's big enough for shallower items such as laptop bags. Even so, it’s still quite a bit smaller than ‘the king of boots’, the E-Class. To prove that particular point, we attempted to see how many carry-on suitcases we could fit in the rear of both; the 5 Series Touring managed eight, while the E-Class trumped that with nine. With the rear seats folded down, you get a long, flat extended load bay all the way through to the front seats, and the boot floor comes flush to the tailgate opening so there’s no lip to lift heavy items over. It’s got some neat features as well, such as the standard powered tailgate that automatically retracts the tonneau cover as it opens. And you know those occasions when you’ve reversed so close to a wall that you can’t open the tailgate? Well, in the 5 Series Touring, you can open just the hinged rear window to gain easier access to the boot.

Running Costs

Broadly speaking, the 5 Series Touring is priced in line with rivals, such as the Audi A6 Avant and Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate, but the Volvo V90 is a little cheaper as a cash buy. If you’re buying on a PCP deal, then the 5 Series Touring comes out a bit more expensive per month than an E-Class Estate and about the same as a V90, but cheaper than an Jaguar XF Sportbrake. The 520d is by far the most popular version and emits from just 119g/km of CO2. That’s very similar to its rivals, making it a similarly sensible company car choice. As long as you steer clear of the petrols, fuel economy should be good. Officially, the 520d should do 62.7mpg, but in our real-world True MPG tests we recorded a combined average of 44.9mpg; that’s still better than figures recorded by the V90 2.0 D4 and E220d. Be aware that four-wheel drive versions knock the MPG down, though. The desirability of the BMW badge helps keep other costs low. Resale values, for example, are in line with its rivals, so private buyers will get back a decent chunk of what they paid when they sell the car, while leasing rates are competitive as well.

Entry-level SE trim gives you everything from leather seats and climate control to sat-nav, front and rear parking sensors and LED headlights. Not to mention a long list of advanced safety aids and the practical touches in the boot. To be honest, there isn’t much point moving up to the next level. If you do, M Sport models come with larger alloy wheels and more aggressive M Sport styling inside and out. But, again, given SE trim is so well equipped and more comfortable, we’d save our money.

Reliability

Although we don’t have specific data for the current 5 Series Touring, in our latest reliability survey BMW finished mid-table in our list of 32 manufacturers, below Audi but above Mercedes-Benz. Thankfully, all 5 Series Tourings come with a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty, which is similar to the cover provided by most rivals.

Safety And Security

All versions of the 5 Series Touring come with a minimum of six airbags and a host of electronic driver aids, including stability control. Automatic emergency braking, with pedestrian detection, is also standard, to reduce the chances of you accidently running into the car in front. Optional safety kit includes lane departure warning, automatic high-beam assist for the headlights, a driver fatigue detection and speed limit recognition. We’d recommend considering the Driving Assistant option, which bundles together all of the key active safety aids for a very reasonable price. Euro NCAP obviously thought this was all good stuff, because the 5 Series (both the saloon and Touring) scored a maximum five stars. An E-Class narrowly betters it for adult protection, but the 5 Series in turn beats that car in child and pedestrian protection scores. An alarm, engine immobiliser, deadlocks (which prevent a door being opened, even if the window is smashed) and locking wheel nuts are fitted to every 5 Series to ward off thieves. Security experts Thatcham Research awarded the car five out of five for its resistance to being stolen and four out of five for its resistance to being broken into.
