What Car? Reviews

The Jaguar F-Pace is fun to drive and surprisingly practical. The 2.0-litre diesel makes the most financial sense, but the V6 diesel is an absolute belter if money is less of a concern.

The 2.0-litre diesel is no firebrand. But for most people, most of the time, it’s gutsy enough, whether you stick with rear-wheel drive or pay a bit extra for four-wheel drive. The optional eight-speed automatic is worth the premium over the standard six-speed manual. See the next video The pick of the engine range, however, is the V6 diesel. It allows for a more relaxing driving experience because it has much more low-down pulling power. And it also better complements the F-Pace’s sporting credentials because it’s ultimately much faster than the 2.0-litre when you put your foot down. The supercharged V6 petrol is much more limited in its appeal, but if you aren’t fussed about fuel economy it is worth a look. It sounds great and is seriously rapid, even though you do need to rev the engine quite hard to get the best from it. A less powerful 247bhp four-cylinder petrol is also available. It’s a punchy performer, remains smooth at high revs and works well with the eight-speed automatic gearbox. However, with less low down grunt than the diesels, quick progress demands plenty of revs.

Ride

We've tried both the standard 'passive' suspension and the more sophisticated adaptive set-up. The latter comes as standard on the V6 engines, but costs extra on the entry-level 2.0-litre diesel. The passive set-up is firm around town – with larger-than-standard alloy wheels exacerbating the problem – and while things improve with speed, the ride is still a bit busy on the motorway. On the plus side, there's very little of the wallowy body bounce you might associate with old-school 4x4s along undulating country lanes. The adaptive set-up is still better, though. Switch it to its most comfortable setting and it's noticeably more supple than the passive suspension, although there’s still a firm edge over battered city streets.

Handling

If you want your SUV to scythe through bends more like a hot hatch on stilts than an old school 4x4 you’ll love the Jaguar F-Pace. It’s the way it flows through fast bends that impresses most; it may be lighter than most of its rivals, but this is still a 1.8-tonne SUV, and yet it genuinely feels as agile as many hatchbacks. It’s only through really tight corners and sudden direction changes that you remember you’re driving something a bit taller. Even then the steering is always precise, building weight at just the right time and with the right consistency to reward you for your efforts. The only other SUV that handles this well is the pricier Porsche Macan.

Refinement

The 2.0-litre diesel is the noisiest of the engines, but it’s never overly intrusive. There’s a gentle chug at tickover and an obvious clatter as the revs rise, although you could level the same criticisms at the equivalent engines in the BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC. The V6 diesel is smoother and quieter when you’re accelerating, partly because it doesn’t need to work as hard to deliver the same burst of pace, but also because it’s an altogether more refined engine. Meanwhile, the supercharged V6 petrol howls away like a slightly less rebellious F-Type, which is great when you’re in the mood but can be annoying at other times. There’s quite a bit of road noise and the odd clonk from the suspension along poorly surfaced roads, but wind noise isn’t a problem at 70mph. The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly in most situations.

Driving Position

So far, we’ve only tried the Jaguar F-Pace in R Sport and S trims, both of which get figure-hugging sport seats as standard. These seats are comfortable and hold you in place around tight bends, although it’s a shame Jaguar charges extra for adjustable lumbar support on all versions of the F-Pace. This important feature helps ward off lower back pain on longer journeys, so is well worth adding if you plan to spend several hours behind the wheel at a time. Scroll down for the next video Prestige and R Sport models have an eight-way manually adjustable driver’s seat, while pricier Portfolio and S models get 10-way electric adjustment. Pay a bit extra and you’ll also get electric adjustment for the steering wheel, but there’s really no need; the wheel is easy to adjust manually and has a good range of up-and-down and in-and-out movement. The controls for the air conditioning aren’t quite as intuitive as in some rivals because you have to stab at buttons to raise or lower the cabin temperature, rather than simply twist a dial. The process isn’t overly distracting, though.

Visibility

You might imagine that swooping styling would make seeing out of the F-Pace quite tricky. Thankfully, the view out of the front is actually pretty good, even though you sit lower in the car than in many rival SUVs. Over-the-shoulder visibility is hampered by the rising window line and small rear screen, but all trims come with front and rear parking sensors to help counter this. To make backing up even easier, a reversing camera is optional on Prestige and R Sport trims and standard on range-topping Portfolio and S versions. A self-parking system and a 360-degree bird’s eye view camera are on the options list.

Infotainment

All F-Paces have an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system as standard, which Jaguar calls InControl Touch. It incorporates sat-nav, a DAB radio, a USB socket, Bluetooth and an in-built wifi hotspot, and can even sync with your smartphone to run a selection of apps. It’s just a shame the screen is often sluggish to respond when you press it. See the next video If you can afford it, we’d recommend upgrading to the range-topping InControl Touch Pro system. It isn’t cheap, but brings a wider 10.2in screen, a more sophisticated sat-nav, an extra USB socket and a 10GB hard drive to store your music on. It’s much more powerful and snappier to respond to screen presses. Options include a digital TV and an InControl Secure system that allows you to monitor the location of your F-Pace using your smartphone. Sound systems range from an 80W system to an uber-powerful 825W Meridian surround option.

Build Quality

Interior quality is probably the least impressive aspect of the Jaguar F-Pace. The cover above the speedo dial is hard and scratchy and the buttons on the steering wheel feel a bit low-rent, so lined up against the Audi Q5 and Mercedes GLC, let alone the Porsche Macan, the Jaguar is mildly disappointing inside. At least the main portion of the dashboard is wrapped in leather, and the gloss black centre console helps lift the interior ambience to an acceptable level.

Front Space

  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star
  • whatcar star

You’re unlikely to have any issues with space in the front, even if you’re really tall. Even on versions equipped with a panoramic glass roof, there’s plenty of head room to accommodate those well over six feet tall. Meanwhile, the front door pockets are a reasonable size (big enough for a one litre bottle of water) and there are further storage cubbies in the centre console and beneath the front armrest. See the next video

Rear Space

Some of Jaguar’s saloons, particularly the XE, are a little cramped inside, but the F-Pace is easily big enough for most families. It’s certainly roomier in the back than a Porsche Macan because a couple of six-footers won’t just fit, they’ll have head and leg room to spare. However, the optional panoramic glass roof does reduce head room to the point anyone around six feet tall might feel their hair brushing the ceiling. Add a third rear passenger and life becomes less comfortable for everyone, while the relatively small rear windows don't exactly flood the cabin with light. All models have a rear armrest as standard that houses a couple of cupholders.

Seating Flexibility

Conveniently positioned handles on the walls of the boot are a reasonably priced option, and allow you to easily drop the 20:40:20 split rear seats. You can also pay extra to have electrically reclining rear seats, which are great when your rear passengers fancy an impromptu snooze. The front passenger seat is height adjustable as standard, with full electric adjustment available as an option. Adjustment lumbar support is on the options list.

Boot Space

Jaguar claims the F-Pace has a bigger boot than any of its key rivals – an enormous 650 litres with the rear seats in place. However, in terms of useable space, there's a similar amount to what you'll find in a BMW X3 or a Land Rover Discovery Sport. A set of golf clubs or a buggy will fit easily, as will a couple of large suitcases. Fold down the rear seats and you’re left with a virtually flat extended load bay to slide in longer loads. A powered tailgate is standard across the range, while a ‘gesture’ tailgate (you wave your foot under the rear bumper and the boot opens automatically) is on the options list. A loadspace partition net is available as an option, as are luggage rails on the boot floor.

Running Costs

If you’re a company car driver, the only Jaguar F-Pace really worth considering is the entry-level 2.0-litre diesel. If you want the lowest possible tax bills then go for the cheapest rear-wheel-drive version equipped with a manual gearbox; this emits the least CO2 (126g/km). However, upgrading to four-wheel drive, as most buyers will, only pushes up CO2 to 134g/km, while the optional eight-speed automatic gearbox raises them further to 139g/km. That said, those figures are only marginally more than an equivalent BMW X3 or Mercedes GLC. The V6 models have obvious appeal, but are available only in range-topping S trim, so are very pricey. You could buy a much larger SUV, such as an Audi Q7 or Volvo XC90, for less money, although neither of those rivals is as fast or a sharp to drive as the F-Pace. Strong desirability should keep depreciation to a minimum, so the F-Pace makes reasonable sense as a private buy, particularly in Prestige and R Sport trim. However, dealer discounts are relatively small and some rivals are available with more attractive finance deals. Use our True MPG calculator and see what your car really does to the gallon

We’d recommend sticking with entry-level Prestige or mid-spec R Sport trim. The former gets you 18in alloys, a powered tailgate, heated leather seats, front and rear parking sensors, keyless start and climate and cruise controls, while the latter adds xenon headlights, 19in wheels and lots of sporty styling touches. Step up to Portfolio, which commands a sizeable premium, and you’ll get a panoramic glass roof, electric seats, keyless entry and a heated front screen. Meanwhile, the range-topping S brings 20in wheels, adaptive suspension and plenty of styling touches. Depending on which trim you choose, worthwhile options include auto-dimming, power-folding, heated door mirrors and a heated front windscreen. We wouldn’t bother with the head-up display or ventilated seat options.

Reliability

It’s difficult to tell how reliable the F-Pace will be, given it’s too new to have been included in any of our reliability surveys. However, Jaguar as a brand finished a disappointing 30th out of 37 manufacturers in our last What Car? Reliability survey. Every new Jaguar comes with a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty as standard, which can be extended if you’re prepared to pay extra, and you can also add MOT cover for a small fee.

Safety And Security

Euro NCAP has crash tested the Jaguar F-Pace, where it scored a maximum five stars. However, look more closely at its adult, child and pedestrian safety scores and it doesn't score as well as a Volvo XC60 for adult or child protection - although the XC60 is one of the safety cars NCAP has ever tested. However, automatic emergency braking is on hand to help your avoid a shunt in the first place, as is a lane-departure warning system. On the options list you’ll find blind-spot monitoring and reverse traffic detection. The latter alerts you about moving vehicles when backing out of a parking space or your driveway. Lane keep assist, which can actively apply steering inputs to keep you in your lane on the motorway, and a driver tiredness monitor, are available as an option.
