What Car? Reviews

Volvo has long been synonymous with estates, and the V90 is its best yet. It's a spacious, practical and classy choice.

Volvo has used its appealingly named Power Pulse technology on the V90's D5 engine. This uses compressed air to help the turbocharger kick in faster, and the result is superbly urgent acceleration from low revs. With less low-down torque than the D5, the entry-level V90 requires significantly more throttle input to get up to speed. However, the linear power delivery of the D5 has been retained and the engine is powerful enough for most situations, if not quite a match for the equivalent E 220 d Estate. If you prefer petrol power, there’s a 187bhp T4 engine available. Alternatively, you can opt for the T8 Twin Engine. This doesn’t lump another turbocharged petrol engine in the boot, instead you get a battery pack and an electric motor powering the rear wheels. This reduces carbon emissions and allows you to run for up to 28 miles on electricity alone if you charge the battery up. Just remember, the faster you go, the quicker the battery gets drained. On a typical commute with some motorway miles, this may drop to around 20 miles or even less. The other advantage of the battery power is performance – the T8 gets from 0-62mph in less than five seconds. The V90 in all its guises is generally a peaceful cruiser, although not to the extent that it matches the whisper-quiet 520d Touring. Engine noise in the diesels is a nuisance, because at idle it emanates a mild rumble that seems out-of-sorts with a premium wagon, but this fades to a reasonable background thrum once on the move. The T8 is virtually silent when running on electricity while the car’s petrol engine is much more refined than the diesels. The eight-speed automatic gearbox fitted to all versions changes smoothly, although again, without quite matching the seamless shifts of the 5 Series. It can also dither when you ask for a burst of acceleration, hindering your progress. At least the T8 shuffles between power sources without disturbing you too much. You don’t really notice the engine start and you rarely notice the car switching from electric to engine power and back again. At speed only the ruffle of wind noise from those big door mirrors piques your interest, because road noise is kept nicely at bay in all variants. Ride comfort is crucial in family estates and this is another area where the V90 impresses, if you tick the box for the optional adaptive dampers that includes air suspension at the rear. It helps the V90 glide along motorways with a relaxing buoyancy and ride most surfaces at town speeds in a composed fashion. Only a particularly vicious ridge sends a thud through the body, something the E-Class tends to suffer from too, but less so the 5 Series. Without the adaptive dampers, the V90 transmits a few too many road imperfections to its occupants. One note of caution though: beware of the R-Design trim. Again, on adaptive suspension it’s fine, but as standard it gets a 15mm lowered ride height, bespoke dampers and stiffer suspension that makes the ride choppy. If you go for the adaptive dampers it also sharpens up the V90’s handling, making it marginally more composed through bends than the 5 Series. However, on the standard suspension, dynamically it falls short of both the 5 Series and the Mercedes E-Class Estate, feeling a closer match to the lethargic and ultimately unrewarding Audi A6 Avant. It remains fairly upright though tight bends, but never feels particularly eager to change direction and the steering doesn't provide much feedback. At least the standard four-wheel drive on the D5-engined models blesses the V90 with plenty of traction when accelerating out of slow corners. It’s worth noting that the heavy battery in the T8 makes it feel less agile than the regular models, something that could be a disappointment if you pick one as a high-performance estate. We also found that the steering wheel could occasionally writhe around in your hands slightly if you accelerated hard from a standstill. The T8 might be four-wheel drive, but the front wheels receive over three times as much power as the rears.

The driver of a V90 is treated well, no matter what their shape. Volvo’s seats are famous for their supportiveness and the V90’s are no different, while wide-ranging electrical adjustment, including for lumbar support, make it easy to get settled. The sports seats in R-Design trim are particularly good, keeping you secure between their enhanced side bolsters during hard cornering. All V90s are automatics, and the two pedals are nicely aligned with the driver’s seat, ensuring a comfortable leg position on long journeys. Forward visibility is very good, but unlike the boxy Volvo estates of old, the V90 has a heavily styled rear end that means the view rearward is slightly obscured. At least reversing sensors come as standard. The V90's Sensus infotainment system features a 9.0in portrait touchscreen, through which you control many of the car's functions. At times it’s unresponsive and hard to find what you want within the vast array of menus and functions, and trying to press the some of the smaller icons while driving is pretty tricky. We much prefer to have a rotary-dial controlled interface, such as those fitted to the 5 Series Touring, E-Class Estate and Audi A6 Avant, which are far less distracting to operate on the go.

The Volvo V90 is superb at accommodating four adults. Those in the front get loads of head and leg room, and it’s the same in the rear, with class-leading knee room back there. It's more of a squeeze width wise for three larger adults sat in the rear, but three children can sit side-by-side perfectly happily. Things aren’t quite as capacious at the business end of the V90. Although the V90's 560-litre boot all but matches that of a BMW 5 Series Touring in volume, the reality is it struggles to fit eight carry-on suitcases that fit easily in its rival. It’s smaller still next to the A6 Avant's boot and thoroughly thrashed by the carrying capacity of the E-Class Estate. The problem is the V90’s stylish, sweptback tailgate, but we should stress the point that while relatively it’s smaller than the competition, it not small and is more than voluminous for most family’s needs. At least the T8's battery pack doesn’t reduce the 560 litre capacity of the boot, although you do lose underfloor storage. The 60/40 split folding rear seats provide less flexibility than the 40/20/40 arrangements of its rivals, but the seat backs fold completely flat at the touch of a button conveniently located just inside the tailgate opening. With them down load capacity grows to 1526 litres, which is frankly massive, if still slightly short of the best. There’s no load lip, and because the V90's boot floor sits fairly close to the ground, lifting heavy bags inside is a breeze. Interior quality is superb – not far off the fit and finish of the excellent BMW 5 Series with an extra sprinkling of minimalist, Scandi-cool.

The V90 is competitively priced versus its main rivals when you compare like-for-like engines – the D4 to the BMW 520d, Mercedes E 220 d and Audi A6 2.0 TDI, and the D5 with BMW’s 525d, Mercedes’ E 350 d and Audi’s 3.0 TDI. Volvo’s strong residuals will help keep PCP finance quotes competitive, too, while the V90’s relatively low CO2 emissions – particularly in two-wheel-drive D4 form – make it an attractive prospect for company car drivers. However, both a BMW 5 Series Touring and an Audi A6 Avant have lower emissions if you’re looking at regular petrol or diesel models. This is where the T8 really scores. With carbon emissions of just 46g/km, it falls into the lowest company car tax bracket. If you do plenty of short journeys punctuated by recharges, you’ll barely have to refuel it, while we saw over 50mpg on a 50 mile commute on a fully charged battery. Start using it without any electricity in its belly, and you’ll see economy plummet to the low 30s or below. As for the T4, it's more expensive to buy and run than the similarly powerful D4. Most people will choose the D4 engine and entry-level Momentum trim, and it’s easy to see why; LED headlights, heated leather seats, sat-nav, Bluetooth, a DAB radio, a powered tailgate, automatic headlights and wipers, keyless start and rear parking sensors are just some of the luxuries that feature as standard. Volvo is synonymous with safety and it has taken this to a new level with the V90, upgrading its standard emergency city braking system to recognise large animals, as well as pedestrians, cyclists and, of course, cars. Standard, too, is a system that will automatically steer you back into your lane on the motorway. Euro NCAP hasn’t tested the V90, but the S90 saloon is one of the safest cars in its class, performing especially well in the safety assist category, unsurprisingly.
