The CEO of Volkswagen Group Herbert Diess told the Financial Times that they are “basically sold out on electric vehicles in Europe and in the United States”. With the order backlog in Western Europe alone is over the 300,000 mark for electric vehicles.

He also added that electric vehicle (EV) sales in China were also picking up as demand around the globe increased.

What Brands are in the Volkswagen Group?

Although many of us see Volkswagen Group and think of VW models like the Golf, Polo, or Passat the group includes other brands as well including SKODA, SEAT, CUPRA, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Porsche and Ducati.

Diess’ comments relate to the entire electric catalogue across all of these brands which is something to be aware of as this could impact your next car choice.

Why Are They Sold Out?

The demand for EVs is on the rise as more and more countries put in place incentives for drivers to make the jump. In the UK there’s a ban due to come in on the sale of new vehicles that produce emissions from 2030 and so we’re seeing many drivers choose an EV for their next car to take advantage of the current incentives before they’re no longer available.

Electric circuits in modern cars require high tech semi-conductor microchips which there remains a shortage of across the industry due to the impact of Covid-19 and damage to factories over the past couple of years. As EVs rely entirely on these for all the complex circuits that power driving, assistance and comfort electronic systems they require more semi-conductor chips than petrol or diesel models.

Additionally, the war in Ukraine is having an impact on their European supply chain and parts are being delayed or having to be sourced from alternative factories in other parts of the world which have a longer lead time.

What Does This Mean for My Order?

If you have currently got an order for one of the above mentioned brands then you shouldn’t worry as existing orders are set to be built and aiming to be delivered this year but it will be new orders placed going forward that will be delivered in the new year.

If you have an order placed with us, then we will regularly keep you updated on its status with weekly or bi-weekly updates that we get from our dealers and you can request an update at any point from our friendly Customer Service Team.
