Estate cars are similar to saloon models but with an extended rear, giving you more boot space and extra legroom for rear-seat passengers.

The main selling point of the large boot is that, unlike an SUV, it's low enough for most pets to get in and out of unaided.

From titans like the Volvo V90 through to the relative newcomers like the Skoda Superb Estate there’s a whole lot of choice if you think an estate is the right choice for your next car. 1. Mercedes-Benz E Class Estate

Mercedes are a brand that is known for their luxury cars and the E Class is no exception.

The latest model builds on the reputation of the E Class, dominating the large executive estate market as one of the most luxurious and comfortable models available. It also looks a little more dynamic and less boxy than its predecessor.  

All models are well-equipped with even the entry-level SE having climate control, satnav, keyless entry, front and rear parking sensors, leather upholstery and much more.

As well as having ten different trim options the E Class has a number of different engines to choose from, including a plug-in hybrid and options with Mercedes’ 4matic four-wheel drive.

2. Skoda Superb Estate

The Skoda Superb was the brand’s flagship saloon car and it’s just as impressive, if not more so, as an estate.

The Superb Estate is fun to drive, reliable and cheap to run making it a great choice for anyone’s next family car.

In 2019 the Superb was revamped and the Estate looks better than ever with its soft-touch interior, including lined cubbies, and extra tech inside. All models are equipped with keyless entry and go, an eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, DAB radio, Bluetooth and air conditioning. With some of the higher models you can also add adaptive cruise control, satnav and an electronically operated boot.

Not only is the Superb all kitted out it’s also one of the largest estates available with a boot capacity of 660 litres and plenty of space for adults to fit comfortably in every seat, even on long drives.

Part of the VW Group, this model shares efficient engines with the likes of Audi A3 and the VW Golf, both of which also made it onto our top five hatchbacks.

There’s also a plug-in hybrid Superb iV Estate that has a fully electric range of up to 35 miles.

3. Volvo V60

Volvo are known for their sensible and safe family cars. Over the past few years, they’ve shed their more square reputation and become a stylish choice for any driver.

The V60 is one of two Volvos that have made it into our top five estate cars. There’s a reason two Volvos have made it onto our top five,  they are known for reliable and comfortable estates that pair driver comfort with the very best safety on the market. The V60 comes with Volvo’s city safety system as standard, which detects oncoming vehicles, pedestrians and even large animals.

The latest edition is not as curvaceous as the previous model, but with its upright grille, LED headlights and chiselled rear it is still a striking shape on the road. 

This executive estate offers a relaxed and comfortable drive even on long haul motorway drives.

The V60 is also a great estate if you’re looking to tow a caravan or trailer with a 2000kg limit. Even if you’ve not got a trailer there’s plenty of storage space with a boot capacity of 529 litres and helpful features like a boot divider, hooks and hidden storage to keep all your luggage secure.

4. BMW 5 Series Touring Estate

BMW is a brand known for their luxury vehicles that combine style, comfort and driving experience in every model from the Z4 Roadster through to the X range SUVs.  

The 5 Series Touring is the estate version of the popular 5 Series Saloon, and has been on the market for nearly 30 years, with over a million sold worldwide. Now in its fifth generation, BMW’s 5 Series Touring estate is an excellent mid-size premium estate that encapsulates the very best that BMW has to offer.

It’s kitted out with the latest tech, with the iDrive infotainment system included in every model, and options to include their remote service app, which lets you check the vehicle status and operate ventilation and central locking functions remotely. There’s even an option for remote boot opening, where you can simply wave your foot under the rear bumper to open the boot.

The standard self-levelling suspension makes this a great choice whether you’re cruising on motorways or driving along winding country roads.

5. Volvo V90

The V90 is the second Volvo to make it into our top five estates.

As mentioned with the V60, Volvo are one of the safest car manufacturers on the market and the V90 is no exception with a five-star rating from the Euro NCAP safety tests.  

The V90 is the largest estate that Volvo offers, and it’s based on the styling of their popular S90 saloon.

With petrol, diesel and both mild and plug-in hybrid engines available you can choose the engine that suits you.

There’s a range of model trims available, all of which offer a safe and secure drive, including the Momentum, R Design, Inscription, and Cross Country.
