Top 5 Electric Cars

Electric motoring is a growing trend with many brands having a hybrid or fully electric vehicle in their catalogue.

The popularity of electric cars is no surprise when you consider the fact that the UK government has banned the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles from 2035 in an effort to have the country hit zero emissions by 2050.

It’s not just the environment that benefits from you switching to an electric vehicle but also your wallet. Running costs are much cheaper as mile for mile electric is cheaper than any available alternative fuel.

We’ve rounded up our top five picks of Electric vehicles available on the market for you.

1. Nissan Leaf

nissan leaf best electric cars

The Nissan Leaf revolutionised the electric market when it was first introduced as the world’s first mass market electric vehicle (EV) and went on to be Europe’s best selling EV in 2018.

Now in its 2nd generation, the current model is more toned down in its design than its futuristic looking predecessor, though it kept the sharp lines, blue 3D mesh grille and the Euro NCAP five-star safety rating.

It now has a longer range as well, with up to 239 miles on the E+ and up to 168 miles on the standard model under WLTP testing.

The new model also has an innovative e-Pedal which transforms the driving experience. This feature almost eliminates the need to use the brake in regular driving, as the car slows and even stops by easing off the accelerator.

Although the suspension is quite firm, due to having to accommodate the weight of the battery, the Leaf still handles well, especially with its light but accurate steering and smooth acceleration.

The Leaf is a spacious family hatchback that is reasonably priced, relatively quick to charge and offers a great mileage range which makes it a great choice for your next car. And there’s a choice of models with the Acenta, N-Connecta and Tekna trim options so you can choose the right spec for your life.  Take a look at our best deals here.

2. Renault Zoe

renault zoe best electric cars

The Renault Zoe is one of the cheapest electric vehicles available on the market. This fully electric model is based on Renault’s best-seller, the Clio, though it’s a little larger, with a boot capacity of 338 litres.

The low-mounted battery pack also increases interior space for passengers. It also lowers the vehicle’s centre of gravity, making it a more agile drive.

Like most electric cars the Zoe is practically silent when you’re driving, as there’s no noisy internal combustion engine. However, there is a little noise when the regenerative braking system is engaged.

For a small hatchback, the Zoe offers great mileage range with a maximum of 245 miles on one of the battery options.

There are three trim options available, the Play, Iconic and GT line all of which come with LED headlights, cruise control, auto lights and wipers and a touchscreen infotainment centre. The Iconic also offers wireless phone charging and parking sensors and the GT Line has different upholstery options and a larger touchscreen.

3. Hyundai Kona

Hyundai is one of the largest car manufacturers on the market, so it's not surprising that one of its models has made it into our top five list.

The Kona is an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) that is available in petrol and diesel engines, but it’s the fully electric version that really makes the Kona stand out.

It has a sleek exterior with a range of vivid colours for you to choose from. On the inside, the Kona has futuristic looks, with a flat metallic-coloured centre console and ‘floating’ infotainment screen.

As an electric model, it offers smooth and rapid acceleration and a comfortable drive.

Compared with other electric models of this size and quality, the Kona is one of the cheapest on the market.

With a range of up to 282 miles with the largest battery, it can get you where you need to go without lengthy charging breaks, which is one of the major concerns with EVs.

4. Tesla Model 3

tesla model 3 best electric cars

When they first introduced the Model 3 Tesla’s aim was to be more affordable and mass produced to get more models out on the road.

With a design based on the Model S the Model 3 has a short bonnet, longer rear windows and roomy rear seats making it a great electric saloon.

It offers speed, doing 0-62mph in just 3.2 seconds, a maximum range of over 300 miles and a five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, so you can be sure you’re in one of the most reliable vehicles on the road.

When you drive a Tesla you have access to their supercharge network and can use your smartphone as a key and remotely control some functions.

Although it’s the most affordable of Tesla’s vehicles the Model 3 is still more expensive compared to other electric vehicles on the market, so if you’re wanting to drive a Model 3, then it may be worth looking at leasing instead of buying outright. Take a look at our best leasing offers here.

5. Audi e-tron

audi e-tron best electric car

The Audi e-tron is the second SUV to make it into our top five electric vehicles, and is Audi’s flagship electric SUV, with more expected to follow.

Like all Audis, the e-tron has been finished to a high standard and offers drivers and passengers a luxurious interior and comfortable drive.

This isn’t the first time we’ve highlighted the e-tron as a standout car, in fact, Tim picked it for our Cars We’re in Love With post.

There are a number of features that make the e-tron a great choice if you’re looking for a large electric SUV, from convenient charging points on both sides of the vehicle, to suspension you can raise for better ground clearance and more technological extras like the option to remove door mirrors and replace them with cameras that feed into small screens inside the vehicle.

The range is 248 miles, and with a charging time of less than 30 minutes on 150kW you’ll be able to travel as far as you need. There is also a range mode, which reduces your electric consumption, allowing you to drive further by taking power from non-essential features like air conditioning.

You can see all our best deals on the e-tron here.
