The Government have confirmed that green number plates for zero emission zones will be introduced this autumn.
The Department for Transport hopes that by making zero emission cars easier to spot it will encourage local authorities to put in place policies to incentivise people to drive them.
These incentives could include cheaper parking or free entry into low or zero-emission zones, which are beginning to be introduced across the UK in the coming year.
The number plates will not be fully green but rather have a strip of green at the side, where some currently have GB as you can see on the design below.

Green number plates are just one part of the government’s plans to achieve net zero emission by 2050 and follows a public consultation on the issue.
Other methods include banning the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid vehicles from 2035, and a £12 million fund for ground-breaking research, £10 million of which will fund a zero emission vehicle innovation competition that will support advancements in battery electric and hydrogen vehicles as well as their charging infrastructure.
